Tsunashiki Tenmangu is a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a 9th-century scholar and poet who was deified as the god of learning. Familiarly called 'Tenjin-san' by locals, the venue draws those who come and pray for good fortune and academic prowess. Many years ago, Sugawara no Michizane is said to have stopped off at Suma Bay en route to Kyushu and rested on a mat made with big rope by local fishermen, which is why, some 76 years after his passing, Suma is where this shrine was established.
