Nicknamed "Nagata-san" by Kobe locals, Nagata Shrine enshrines a deity called Kotoshironushi-no-Okami (literally the God of Thing-Sign-Master) famous for bringing good fortune to businesses and industries. The year 2001 marked the 1800th anniversary of its enshrinement. It is famous for an ancient ceremony called "Tsuina-Shinki Shinji".A nationally designated intangible cultural heritage, this is a Shinto purification ritual to drive out evil spirits practiced since the Muromachi era. Also renowned is the large sacred camphor tree behind the Kusumiya Inarisha Shrine. It is also famous as a place where prayers for recovery from diseases and relief from medical ailments such as hemorrhoids are granted.
