Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden
Located near the summit of Mt. Rokko at an altitude of 865 meters, the Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden takes advantage of a cool climate - equivalent to southern Hokkaido - to cultivate about 1,500 species of alpine plants from around the world, including plants from cold regions, natives from Rokko, and other wildflowers.
Across the 50,000 square meter botanical garden, each plant is cultivated as closely as possible to its natural growing environment, be it in a rock garden with alpine plants, a wetland along a mountain stream, or in the shade of beech trees.
The garden was established in 1933 and received the guidance of esteemed botanist Tomitaro Makino. In 1955 it was designated as a museum-equivalent facility. Across its long history, this venerable and cherished botanical garden has been visited by three emperors.
