Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum
The Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum is Japan’s only museum dedicated to builders’ tools.
Driven by the theme of “Connecting people and nature, innovation and tradition,” the museum reopened outside Shin-Kobe Station in October 2014.
From around 35,000 artefacts collected by the museum, some 1,000 are selected for display. The atrium also houses scale models that are the handiwork of the top craftworkers of our time, such as 7-meter-tall Toshodaiji temple Golden Hall pillars and kumimono (the system of supporting blocks and brackets used in temple construction), a skeleton teahouse that demonstrates intricate traditional architecture.
Leveraging the unique nature of a museum that has carpenters on staff, programs offer a close-up look at professionals applying their skills in a carpentry workshop (check the museum website for the schedule).
