Canal Promenade (the Hyogo Canal/the Shinkawa Canal)
The Hyogo Canal is the largest canal in Japan. It was excavated to make a water way that links the Suma area to the Hyogo Port without having to take a roundabout route to go through the Cape Wada, known as the site of many shipwrecks. In Meiji 8 (1875), the Shinkawa Canal was opened, and in Meiji 32 (1899) the whole canal was opened. This allowed for the safe ship navigation, and housing on both banks was promoted. Along the Canal Promenade, which was paved as a 300-meter waking trail, the history of the Hyogo Canal is also introduced with panels.
