Suma Temple is the head temple of the Suma Shingon Buddhist sect. Here, you'll find historical landmarks related to the Taira and Minamoto clans - starting with the statue of the Sho Kanzeon Bosatsu (Avalokitesvara) and the pine under which Minamoto no Yoshitsune once sat. There is also the tomb where the head of Taira Atsumori (known as the Title-less Courtesan) is buried, as well the pond where it was washed upon decapitation.Said to be the origin of Ariwara no Yukihara and preserving the ichigenkin (single-string zither) tradition, this is a temple synonymous with history and culture.
