Sorakuen is a Japanese-style green oasis created on land formerly owned by Taijiro Kodera, father of former Kobe City Mayor Kenkichi Kodera. Completed in the early 20th century, it was bought by Kobe City in 1965 and is now open for the public to enjoy. Stand-out features include a traditional fountain pond-style Japanese garden, complete with stepping stones and a stone bridge. Other highlights include the Cyces garden, a great camphor tree over five centuries old, beautiful azaleas blooming in spring, and burning red leaves in autumn. Alongside the former Kodera family stables with their imposing front gate and European-style architecture is a funayakata houseboat, the old Hassam houses (both of which have been designated important cultural properties), and a tea room that blends in harmoniously with the garden landscape.
