Kobe has various monuments and facilities so people never forget the damage caused by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake on January 17, 1995. Higashi-yuenchi Park is the location of the Earthquake Memorial Monument and the Great Hanshin Earthquake memorial flame, "1.17 Light of Hope." The Port of Kobe Memorial Park, in Meriken Park, preserves the damage suffered by Kobe Port. The Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institute at HAT Kobe ensures future generations learn from the experiences of Kobe during the earthquake. Another earthquake-related location is the Nojima Fault Museum that preserves the Nojima fault line in Hokudan Earthquake Memorial Park.
