The Kitano area is dotted with residences built by foreigners who arrived in Kobe after the port opened is a popular sightseeing area. Mt. Maya, which is directly behind Shin-Kobe Station, the shinkansen station, is a great spot to experience nature so close to town.

The Ijinkan area with its exotic atmosphere has Western-style houses, art museums, jumble shops, and souvenir shops--perfect for a leisurely stroll. However, the charm of Kitano is not only sightseeing, but also the many shops frequented by the locals with laid-back atmospheres--established bars, live jazz clubs, cafes, restaurants serving cuisine from around the world, boutiques and imported jumble shops. The City Loop Bus that runs between the Kitano area and Naka Pier is a convenient way to visit the sightseeing spots between the mountains and the port.

The area around Shin-Kobe Station, the gateway to Kobe, is also the entrance to one of the natural sightseeing spots of Kobe. Take the Shin-Kobe Ropeway from beside the station to enjoy Nunobiki Herb Park where flowers and herbs are always in bloom. Easy access to the mountains from the city is one of the appealing points of Kobe. Shin-Kobe Station is the start of the trail up the mountain behind the station to Nunobiki Falls and Nunobiki Dam--a pleasant 10-minute walk up the mountain.
